Axis of Action (n.d.a)

Axis of Action (n.d.a) provide a comprehensive guide to the Media codes and conventions, clearly broken down into symbolic, technical and written codes along with form, story and genre conventions. Axis of Action also provide media codes and conventions analysis guides to assist learners in their analysis. This resource is to be used by both the learners and the teachers throughout the learning sequence to scaffold their understanding of the codes and conventions used by Greta Gerwig and as reference throughout their analysis activities both individually and as a class.

Media Reframed VCE Units 1-4 Second Edition (Chapter 4)

The Media Reframed textbook (Hoban et al., 2023) provides critical information for each learner to support their understanding of storytelling and genre conventions, style within media, historical and cultural contexts, the creation of audience engagement, the influence of narratives on audiences and the manipulation of media codes and conventions. This chapter of the textbook is to be utilised both by the learner as a first port of call for any questions, but by the teacher as a pedagogical tool to increase their pedagogical content knowledge and assist in their understanding of the Unit 2 Outcome 1 content.

The Narrative Structure Booklet
Media Knite (2024)

The Media Knite (2024) Narrative Structure Booklet is a tool that learners are to engage with to boost their understanding of how narratives are structured and the 5 different aspects of narratives. This is an important tool for students to engage with to assist with their response in the analysis activity and to refer to prior and after watching each film being analysed. This tool can similarly be used by the teacher to refer to certain aspects and narrative structures used by Greta Gerwig to refer to throughout collaborative class discussion and analysis.

Media Terminology Cue Sheet
Squire (2023)

The Media Terminology Cue Sheet developed by Squire (2024) should be utilised by each learner as a significant tool in their in-class and at-home learning and study. This tool is a simple guide to scaffold learner understanding and response throughout the analysis. The Media Terminology Cue Sheet includes common VCE Media terms, descriptive language and sentence starters or recommended phrases to be used when describing various elements of film both within discussion and throughout analysis response. Similarly, this is a tool that can be utilised by the teacher to assist in collaborative class discussion through prompting of phrasing or VCE Media terms.

Greta Gerwig Cheat Sheet
Boyd (2024)

The Greta Gerwig Cheat Sheet is one that should be utilised by both the learners and teacher throughout the delivery of this learning sequence. The cheat sheet identifies key media codes and conventions that Greta Gerwig engages with throughout ‘Lady Bird’, ‘Little Women’ and ‘Barbie’ along with how she creates audience engagement, the historical and cultural contexts of her texts and how her texts have influences on different audiences. This cheat sheet is to be used each week and referred to consistently by each learner, it can provide a quick resource for study revision for the written assessment and for each individual analysis activity.
